Virtual Interview Tips

Virtual interviews are becoming the norm in many professional settings. Here are Platinum Travel Recruitment’s top 20 interview tips to help with the process.

Maintain good eye contact. Looking directly at your interviewer is essential.

Choose a professional background and make sure there is no mess.

Find a brightly lit room.

Pick a quiet space. Make sure there is no background noise.

Make sure your mobile phone on silent.

If you are doing the call on a phone or laptop make sure you have enough battery power.

Turn off notifications on your phone, laptop or PC.

Test the technology in advance, check you have installed zoom, Microsoft Teams or Google meet and try it with a family member or friend before the interview. Record and look back on it to see if there is anything you need to improve on.

Plan and prepare your attire in advance.

Be mindful of your facial expressions & body language. Sit up straight and nod when necessary.

Place the window where your interviewer will appear on the same monitor as your camera and move it as close to the camera as possible, ideally in the centre. This way when you look at them, as you naturally will during your conversation, you are also looking at the camera.

Use a professional profile name, ideally your full name.

Check for audio issues, is there an echo? Is your volume turned up?

Close down programs to avoid a slow down of your operating system.

Reposition your camera to make eye contact with your interviewer. Invest in a good quality webcam or built in camera on the PC/Laptop.

Connection is everything – make sure you have a good WiFi signal.

Show that you have skills and experience to do the job and deliver great results and give examples of this.

Research the company at length

Ask questions.

Finish the interview by thanking them for their time and perhaps send a thank you email.

Good luck!
